What is CoolsSculpting?

The CoolSculpting procedure is a ground breaking method for the safe non-invasive removal of fat in unwanted areas of the abdomen, love handles and back. The procedure has been proven to reduce fat without damaging or harming other body parts.

How does it work?

CoolSculpting works by the mechanism of cryolipolysis. Cryolipolysis is the elimination of fat by the use of cold without damage to other tissues. This is possible because fat cells are more susceptible to cold. This allows other tissues such as skin, blood vessels, muscles, and nerves to be spared. As a result of the cooling, fat inside the fat cells will crystallize causing the fat cells to be removed. Over time, these fat cells will be gradually cleared through a safe natural biologic process, called, apoptosis (a normal controlled cellular removal process). The removal of fat and the fat cells will result in a reduction of the thickness of the fat in the treated area.

What happens to the fat and fat cells?

The cooling triggers an inflammatory process, which results in the gradual removal of the fat cells over a two to four month period. The lipids from the fat cells are slowly released and transported through the lymphatic system much in the same way as fat from food.

What can happen during the procedure?

First you and Dr. Brezel will select the area(s) to be treated. Afterwards, you will be positioned on your back or side and an applicator from the CoolSculpting device will be applied. A vacuum will draw up the desired tissue between two cooling panels, which will cause patients to experience a gentle tugging of the skin. Once the tissue is in place, the cooling process will begin and patients will feel a cold sensation. This will most likely dissipate after a few minutes. Each treatment lasts one hour.

Is it safe?

The CoolSculpting device is carefully controlled by an advanced monitoring system. The applicators have sensors embedded in them, which provide constant monitoring of the treated area ensuring consistent and uniform cooling. The sensors are linked to the control unit, which is linked to a paging system carried by Dr. Brezel or his staff.

When can I return to normal activity?

CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure, allowing patients can return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure. Patients will experience some redness in the area, which may last from a few minutes to a few hours. Some patients may experience temporary bruising, tingling, and or numbness in the treated area, which can last for several weeks.

When will I see the results?

Because the fat is cleared by a normal safe natural biologic process the results are not immediately apparent. Some patients will be begin to see an improvement in their body contour as early as three weeks with the most dramatic results occurring after two months. The body can continue to eliminate the treated fat for up to four months.

Are the results permanent?

The numbers of fat cells we have are established during our teenage years and remain stable during our lifetime. Changes in fat mass during our adult years are attributed to changes in fat cell volume not an increase in the number of fat cells. The CoolSculpting procedure eliminates fat cells from the body and as a result the changes are permanent. As long as the patients maintain their body weight by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and diet the results should be permanent.

Can I undergo more than one treatment?

Each procedure should produce a 20-25% reduction of fat in the treated area over a period of 2-4 months. It is possible to treat multiple areas during the same office visit. At your follow up visit, Dr Brezel will assess the treated area and make recommendations if additional treatment would produce further improvements if you desire. Additional treatments of the same area can be performed and will produce cumulative effects.

What are the advantages of CoolSculpting over other methods of fat removal?

The patented controlled cooling of the CoolSculpting procedure targets and will only eliminate fat and fat cells. Other modalities such as lasers, radiofrequency, ultrasound and liposuction may affect other cells in ways CoolSculpting does not. Other procedures for fat removal, as mentioned above, may require a longer painful recovery and entail risks not associated with CoolSculpting.

Am I a good candidate for CoolSculpting?

Ideal candidates are patients who are looking for treatment of localized fat bulges that are not easily reduced by diet or exercise. CoolSculpting is not substitute for weight loss, obesity or patients contemplating surgery. Patients should expect a reduction of localized fat bulges in the treated areas only.
